Portofino Marine Reserve was established by decree of the Ministry of the Environment on April 26 1999 and includes the municipalities of Camogli, Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure. Its purposes include both protection of the marine environment and resources and promotion and appreciation of local economic activities which are compatible with the area's natural heritage and landscape. The Marine Reserve is open for boating, bathing, diving and sports fishing, though there are certain rules and regulations to follow, and in some cases it is necessary to obtain a permit. Information in this regard is available on the Marine Reserve's website or from its offices, open Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 2 PM.

"Un'area salva da guardare" ("A safe area to be guarded"): this is the slogan introduced in 2000 for the promotion and protection of one of the world's most beautiful and best-known seas introduced, in an area visited by millions of tourists every year who enjoy the thrills of boating excursions to admire the beauties of the coastline and video images of the sea floor, or underwater diving in the extraordinary sea bed of the Portofino Promontory. "Natural as water": but what to see? On the coast visitors may admire the enchanting villages of Paraggi, Portofino and San Fruttuoso di Camogli, the cliffs towering over the sea, the rich and diverse vegetation. Underwater, they may enjoy the extraordinary underwater rocks of create natural value with the famous red coral of Portofino and all kinds of fish... without forgetting the vast fields of posidonia algae, a great natural asset and refuge for all kinds of animals.
